Andrew Woolner, Act 1

When I read Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde this winter, I was struck by the fact that Jekyll isn’t good. He has Hyde inside him all the time. He friends are concerned with returning him to the state of an upstanding gentleman, but the fact is that Jekyll never really was one.

Add on to that the fact that the story is written in the 1890s. Any member of English society (upper middle class and above, as Jekyll seems to be) at that time was in some ways complicit in the crimes of the British Empire. However, the crimes that mattered to that society were ones mostly committed by poor people and desperate people. You could be hung for petty theft, but stealing the wealth of a nation and leaving its people to starve, that was fine.

Since the spring, I’ve been thinking of a narrative in which Hyde is a revolutionary. The sole murder he commits in the book is of an elderly Member of Parliament. If you wanted to find someone complicit in the crimes of a nation, who better than a member of government? And would it not be fitting then that this is Hyde’s victim?

What emerged was a world divided, maybe a little more blatantly than our own, but not wholly unrecognizable, where the haves exploit the have nots. The question then, the question that our Utterson and Jekyll have different answers to is: if the state can murder people, can people murder the state?

Wow! What a process.

Together with the ensemble, I set to work collectively on the story of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, a narrative that shows how norms and values from Victorian times still apply to today’s society

During the creative process we noticed the duality that not only applies to Jekyll & Hyde, but also influences all the other characters from different social positions and economic wealth. From the theme of duality, we sought our inspiration, and started working in a totally different direction in which we left the story behind and focused on the issues that resonated with us. This ultimately led to a wonderful product that I had the pleasure of working on. 

I wish the performers a lot of fun playing and an interesting experiment on the floor.

この冬、『ジキル博士とハイド氏の奇妙な事件』を読んだとき、ジキルは善人ではないという事実に衝撃を受けた。彼は常に自分の中にハイドを抱えている。友人たちは彼を立派な紳士に戻そうとするが、実はジキルは紳士ではなかったのだ。

それに加えて、この物語が1890年代に書かれたという事実がある。当時の英国社会（ジキルがそうであったように、上流中産階級以上）の一員は、ある意味で大英帝国の犯罪に加担していた。しかし、その社会にとって重要な犯罪は、ほとんどが貧しい人々や自暴自棄になった人々が犯したものだった。些細な窃盗なら絞首刑でもよかったが、国家の富を盗み、国民を飢えさせることは許された。

春以来、私はハイドが革命家である物語を考えてきた。その中で彼が犯した唯一の殺人は、年老いた国会議員である。国家の犯罪に加担している人物を見つけたいのなら、国会議員以外に誰がいるだろうか？そして、この人物がハイドの被害者であることは、ふさわしいことではないだろうか。

そこに現れたのは、持てる者が持たざる者を搾取する、分断された世界であった。そのとき、われわれのパターソンとジキルが異なる答えを出す疑問は、「国家が人を殺せるなら、人は国家を殺せるのか？」

ワオ！なんというプロセスだろう。

ヴィクトリア朝時代の規範や価値観が、現代社会でも通用することを示す物語だ。

創作の過程で私たちは、ジキルとハイドだけでなく、異なる社会的立場や経済的豊かさを持つ他の登場人物たちにも影響を与える二面性に気づいた。二重性というテーマからインスピレーションを得た私たちは、ストーリーを置き去りにして、私たちの心に響く問題に焦点を当てるという、まったく異なる方向性で制作を開始した。それが結果的に、私が携わらせていただいた素晴らしい作品につながりました。

出演者の皆さんが楽しくプレーし、フロアで興味深い実験ができることを祈っています。
