About The Setting
設定について
Our cabaret takes place approximately 150 – 200 years after the Great Ending. The Ancestors messed up and ruined the earth. Once we had a global civilization. There was inequality, for certain, but life was pretty wonderful for the Ancestors who lived in our part of the world. Unfortunately, the wonderfulness hid the consequences of that careless comfort. We’re not sure exactly what happened as the records are incomplete, but the collapse of human civilization was nearly complete. Once there were billions of us, now our best guess is as many as 100 million to as few as 5 million.
However it was caused, the climate changed, ecosystems collapsed, and with it the ecosystem of the ancestors’ global civilization. Lush landscapes have become deserts, and all the things that cling to it, including us, are occasionally washed away by violent storms. Humanity is tenacious. We cling like moss to this rock we call Earth.
Civilization is trying to rebuild itself. We don’t know what the global population is now, but humans are certainly more sparse on the ground than we used to be. Here in the Great Plain, which stretches for hundreds of klicks, settlements are dotted, appearing and disappearing with changing conditions. Most of us live and die within a few klicks of where we were born, unless we become storm refugees. No one has done a survey of all the settlements, let alone a census, but there are three main types that exist:
- The Bubble Cities: After the fall of civilization, the richest of the Ancestors retreated into these self-sufficient domes run by their robot servants. To most of us, these are a mystery. No one comes in, and no one goes out: no humans, in any case. Small scrub settlements have cropped up nearby and trade essentials with the occasional robot or robotic agent. Are there any humans left inside? If so, are they in charge, or have they become the servants of the robots
- Scrub Settlements: The most common type of community. Some of these crop up around Bubble Cities, taking advantage of a trading relationship, but they can pop up anywhere, usually near some kind of resource, like a tin mine or a “river” (more usually a muddy stream) or underground aquifer. Each settlement has its own government and system of government, ranging from despotic authoritarianism through to communalism. The largest of these have populations in the tens of thousands and basic civic functions like police, rudimentary courts, etc.
- Bunkers: The bunker cities are buried deep underground. The occasional resident interacts with surface dwellers, but unlike the Bubble Cities, the Bunker people do no trade with the surface. The people who live there are descendants of the Ancestors known as “preppers” or maybe “preppies”. The records are unclear on this name. Those who leave the bunkers are forever banished as those within fear contamination from the outside world.
