Kikai-ga-shima: Two or Several Solitudes
During the Heian period in medieval Japan, three men are exiled to a remote island as punishment for an attempted coup d’etat. In the present, a man and a woman attempt to tell that story, while keeping the real world at bay. But questions begin to accumulate as the line between the real and unreal gets blurry, both in the story and in the personal lives of the performers. Kikai-ga-shima: Two or Several Solitudes will be an exploration on the construction of our identities using stories from the Heike Monogatari and from the Noh theatre tradition, focusing on the story of Shunkan.
The YTG team has a familiarity with the story of Shunkan, having created an earlier version of the show in 2014. In that year, YTG members Andrew Woolner and Graig Russell created a show about the reality-bending properties of the theatre space using stories from the Heike Monogatari. This year’s Kikai-ga-shima: Two or Several Solitudes will be a reimagining of that 2014 show. This new piece will feature Andrew Woolner again along with our guest theatre artist Catherine Hong Doan Nguyen. Together with the core YTG creative team, and a diverse, international team of artists, they will spend five months researching, exploring, breaking down, and finally re-devising Kikai-ga-shima from the ground up.
The 2014 Kikai-ga-shima leaned very heavily on the tense interplay between the two performer-characters, and this new version will be no different. We’re anticipating that the tension between Andrew’s English Canadian identity and Catherine’s French Canadian identity will be a key component of the production, bringing the idea of national identities and national foundation myths to the fore.
Research will start in May 2020, with rehearsals commencing at the beginning of June. There will be a showcase production in July, featuring YTG’s summer ensemble, presenting myths, both Japanese and foreign, to be curated and adapted into the final production. This will be followed by a fully mounted version that will premiere at the World Peace Theatre in Kawasaki September 19th to 21st, 2020.
It is our hope that Kikai-ga-shima: Two or Several Solitudes will then tour in Japan and internationally. We strongly believe that it’s important to provoke a conversation about national identity right now, and that’s what we hope our new show, possibly with your help, will do.
